The book hereby presented to the English reader is a newtranslation of the first of the three classical works of Marx—the other two being The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bona-parte and The Civil War in France -which contain a masterlyanalysis of the events in France in the revolutionary periods:1818-1851 and 1871.
The book presents also for the first time in English transla-tion the full Introduction by Engels written in 1895,which,deliberately distorted by“V orwrts and never published in fullby the German Social-Democratic Party, has for many yearsbeen 'used as an excuse for oportunist tactics. The passages pre-viously omitted are printed here in italics and put in squarebrackets.
The notes, unless otherwise stated, are as in the Russian edi-tion published by the Marx-Engels-Lenin Institute,Moscow.
